Art practice and spiritual practice often share some of the same characteristics: deep concentration, heightened awareness and devotion to the practice itself. And when the mental state arising from such a practice transmits from the artist to the art, the result may be a kind of meditative offering. This is the ground from which springs the series Altared States in which Barbara Parmet locks onto our gaze with eyes that observe the viewer and inquire "Who do I see seeing me seeing?" These visual koans are meant to stop the chattering mind in its tracks.
These one-of-a-kind pieces sold out at a 2004 exhibition. They range in size from 16x20 to 3x4 inches and are made of archival photographs with paint, graphite, copper and wood.
